Nominee Background and Experience

What is my experience as a faculty member?

I pursued an academic career because I have a passion for teaching and scientific discovery.  I teach general, physical and computational chemistry both in large-lecture, small classes and (computer) laboratory formats. I seek to create welcoming learning environments and use active, inquiry-guided learning techniques in all settings.

I have over 12 years of experience as an Associate Department Head, managing a staff of 20, a budget of tens of millions, more than 150,000 square feet of space, and all aspects of operations and safety.

Why did I join ACS?

I joined in 1991 at the end of my undergraduate studies to show commitment to the profession, not realizing at first how much professional development I would receive!

What is my ACS leadership experience?

Local- Member since 1991 and elected leader in the North Carolina (NC) Local Section since 2004, first as Alternate Councilor, then as Councilor since 2008. NC-ACS Subcommittees: Project SEED, Women Chemist Committee (WCC), and Education.

Regional- I have been on the organizing committee for 2 SERMACS (Southeastern Regional Meetings of the ACS) which were hosted by the NC local section. In 2023, I was on the WCC and Education subteams to organize the WCC luncheon, COACh workshops, and K12 Teacher Day.
